Howard Head was an aeronautical engineer who is credited with the invention of laminate skis and oversized tennis racquets. He founded the Head Ski Company in 1948 and sold it to AMF in 1969. The Head/AMF company made itself a name as racquet producer in the 70s, when they had American top star Arthur Ashe under contract. The Head Arthur Ashe Competition was a very successful racquet. It featured the unusual material combination aluminium and fiberglass. In the course of the years, follow-up versions of this racquet were released, the Arthur Ashe Competition 2 and 3.
